 Building Permit
For a building permit, please pick up the form in the Township Office, or call 616-887-8863 to have it mailed to you.  The Building Inspector, Casey Patterson, is in Sparta Township on Mondays 10:00 am - 12:00 am and on Tuesdays 8:00 - 10:00 am & 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

 Contractor Permit
All contractors are required to register their license each year. This registration form should be read, signed and returned with a copy of the license and the $5 fee:

 Dog Licenses
Dog licenses are available at the Sparta Township office in December, January and February. After March 1, they MUST be purchased at the Kent County Animal Shelter, 711 Ball Ave, Grand Rapids, (616) 336-3210.

All dogs over 4 months old need a license each year. You must have proof of rabies vaccination. License fees are reduced for dogs that have been spayed or neutered, and for owners over age 62.

 Parcel Assessments

A summary of assessment information is provided for your convenience.  It includes parcel number, property address, owner name, assessed and taxable values, year built, square footage, bathrooms, acreage and school district.  Sparta Township does not warrant that the data contained herein is error-free. Those relying on this data do so at their own risk.

 Passports

Sparta Township will process passport applications Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. 

To apply, you will need the following:

  • Proof of identity (picture id – usually a driver’s license)

  • Proof of citizenship  (usually a birth certificate – this must be a certified original, not a copy; it will be submitted with the application and returned with your new passport)

  • 2 passport photos (official size and type; available from any photo studio –  Mombers, Meijer, Walgreens, etc.)  

  • $67 in check or money order for United States Dept. of State ($52 if under age 16)

  • $30 in check, money order or cash for Sparta Township 

  • any prior passport

Current wait time to get your passport after applying is 14 weeks - apply early!
